about KLRwP
College of Family Physicians in Poland
KLRwP was established to draw up the strategy of implementation of the family doctor institution into the health care system in Poland. Among 34 founder members, we can find parliamentarians like the late Senator Zofia Kuratowska and MP Marek Balicki, university teachers like Professor Maciej Latalski, Professor Tadeusz Tolloczko, Professor Tadeusz Chrusciel and Assistant Professor Rafal Nizankowski and last but not least health care managers and doctors working with patients on a daily basis. The basic assumptions for the College were based on the example of such organizations like the Royal College of General Practitioners in Great Britain, as well as other similar scholarly associations of family doctors in Europe, Canada and the US.
Currently, our College gathers over five thousands of family physicians in the country. The College, being the biggest Polish scholarly organization assembling family doctors, after nearly one year long assessment process, was admitted to the World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians (WONCA) in 1996.The College of Family Physicians in Poland is a professional, scholarly society of family physicians, consistently striving to build a high quality health care system, serving health, dignity and good physical and mental condition. The College fulfills its mission by developing and representing the specialty of family medicine, fostering and maintaining high standards of medical education, supporting the development of research in the area of family medicine, educating the society, as well as assisting its members in professional and academic development. The College aspires to enable all the citizens and their families to receive the services of a competent family doctor. The College participates in a process of transformation of the existing health care system. Primary health care, its objectives and place in a medical system are the main areas of the College's interest.
Primary objectives of the College:
  • To support professional development of family physicians
  • To support academic development of family medicine
  • To strengthen the role of family medicine, within the primary health care system.
  • The College uses a variety of means and methods to accomplish its objectives. The highest priority has been given to family-medicine service quality. The organization has developed and published its guidelines on different clinical areas in the last nine years. Based on those guidelines, educational materials have been developed. They are available on the College web site not only for the College's members.
The College organizes various symposiums, courses and conferences. A national congress is organized annually in various places in the country. The educational monthly journal Lekarz Rodzinny (ang. "Family Doctor") has been published for eleven years now and it is available to our members as part of the membership fee. By co-funding The LANCET Academy of Continuing Education, the College hopes to organize its diverse educational activities. For many years, the College has been promoting modern, systematic approaches to the quality issues. It has organized the School of Tutors, where the leaders of peer-review groups are trained. Another College's activity is the family-doctor accreditation program, based on certain standards explicitly determining whether the practice is desirable or poor. Due to its very clear research ambitions, the College arranges conventions, conferences and congresses which present great opportunities to present the achievements not only to family doctors, but also to other medical specialists interested in a variety of aspects of medical care. Problemy Medycyny Rodzinnej (ang. "Topics of Family Medicine"), a quarterly research magazine of the College, gives doctors an opportunity to present the results of their research projects and papers.
